It took place at a remote cabin 12 miles east of Mt. Hamilton in Santa Clara County. A gathering of seven close friends were enjoying a weekend in the country. On Sunday morning, June 27, a leisurely breakfast was just being finished as some friends were preparing to head home in the early afternoon. Glen was in the kitchen doing dishes and Marc was nearby making a cup of coffee. Suddenly, a fireball broke out with a whoosh engulfing the two men. Marc suffered mostly 2nd degree burns to 30% of his body. Glen suffered both 2nd and 3rd degree burns to 50% of his body. They were airlifted to Valley Medical Center.
This would be a very shocking and traumatic event anywhere, but considering the remote location, without the quick thinking of the 5 friends and family, things could have gone much worse. Each one instinctively acted without hesitation to extinguish fires on Marc and Glen, control the kitchen fire, call for help, and manage the victims from going into deep shock. They are heroes who burst into action nearly as fast at the fireball, saving the lives of their two friends. The courage and suffering during the long wait for help was transcendent.
An incredible stroke of luck was the rescue team having their annual picnic nearby that morning. A Sheriff arrived in about 25 minutes followed by an ambulance. It would have taken 90 minutes if they weren't already on the mountain top. Also, San Jose has one of the only critical burn centers which was a short helicopter ride from the scene. The only other burn centers of this caliber are in Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon.
Marc has a long recovery ahead of him and it will be some time before his life returns to normal. A heartfelt thanks and deep gratitude to all those who have responded with support and encouragement during this difficult time.
If you would like to contribute to help offset the costs of recovery, please click here. There will be a benefit art show and reception for Marc on August 6, at the Mill Gallery in Santa Cruz.
Thank you all for your help and concern.
Just a slight clarification: it was, to my understanding, the firefighters who were having their picnic nearby...thanks sooo much to the whole rescue team, and all those who have helped since.
